Dream of the Zoo

I went to the petting zoo
stumbling past goats and mule
gathering up bits of kibble
horrified
… ATM. Withdraw or Deposit?

the metaphor
for our daily lives crash in

I fed the goats and mule anyway.

A thought

I could know the voice of Universe if I could translate the language of the wind
I would know the joy of it as well, if I could keep stars in my pocket
But then all wouldn’t be a mystery and the hope of discovery would be forgot

You have said to me impossible

You have said to me it is impossible
to understand the troubles of your soul
the color of my skin prevents me
the nature of my love forbids
But I am here to tell you
not that you are wrong but that in fact
you are right
My heart has never broken – as yours
but it has broken
My eyes have never cried – as yours
but they have cried
My hands have never bruised – as yours
but they have bruised
My dreams have never been beaten – as yours
but they have been beaten
My words never questioned – as yours
but they have been questioned
My status never forced – as yours
but it has been forced
My sex never stolen – as yours
but it has been stolen
My person never denied – as yours
but it has been denied
And so – you are right and clear when you say I do not know
the pain that you have felt or the fear you have been given
but then neither have you known mine.
Does this preclude us from comforting
or the genteel thrust of hopes hands into the other’s?

When you answer this… then perhaps what once was deemed impossible to know is possible none the less and we can be made siblings in our shared experiences.

Faith

Faith has many dimensions
it casts shadow and reflects light in a thousand languages
the curve of its whisper and the strength of its word
can build hope out of nothing
and linger long after inspiration has gone.
Faith is not one voice
it is not one song
it is a million colors
under a million suns
and has a million stars
to call upon
Faith has many features
eyes with tears and prayers unheard by
mortal ears
it is that which holds us to our dreams
and keeps us strong when
even the road seems to turn
against us and head back
from where we have come.

Faith.

Like A Girl

Like a Girl!

I hate the ‘P’ word.
You know the one –
P. U. S. S. Y.

Why?

Because
It reduces
seduces
diminishes
and
decimates
it seeks to control
overthrow
ruin and distort
the female form
– a portion of her power
into the going rate
of your verbal hour

Do you call a man by his bits?
Do you get props and rises for diminishing his shit?

No.

Men and women
use the word
equally as much
Negating her function
to a disembody word
of destruction
to reduce her to ‘it’
as in
make it drip
reach out and slap that shit
hit it
bend it
pull out your fraction
and divide it.
Then use it to
emasculate
abbreviate and
tear down
the other soul
in masculine form
through insinuation
that in this tirade
man would see it as
a degrade
as if being called a girl
in any capacity
is something
horrible and
unworthy of
any one…

Don’t you see what has been done?
Don’t you see the abuse?

And don’t give me that excuse
that respect surrounds it
when you use it – bull shit.

So let me set the record straight.

I ::insert any word here:: like a girl.
Every thing I do is
like a girl.
Because I am
a girl
And what I have done and am going to do, will what?
be. like. a. GIRL!

I’ve seen the world
gone from west to the east coast hittin it
speaking a number of languages
hiked to the top of 2446 steps of God and made it
dreamed dreams
seen them sprout
blossom and be
fragrant
caught home base and
made ‘em hate it
shaken steppin to the plate
cuz I owned it!
skied down mountains in a blaze
trippin up to gold
on my way down
as an
Olympic.
painted
sculpted
met CEOs and Queens
Carried Shrines of God
on my shoulders
in the rain
Mastered the arts
visualize the degree
set my spit on fire
Sank giants to their knees
the list goes on
the conquests of my world
But… guess what…
I did it like a girl.

So the next time you utter
the word I will not mention
or seek to degrade
a person by gender
I suggest you think twice
what your words mean
and to this end
think of your mother, your wife,
child or girlfriend
would you diminish her
for a moment in the
spot light?
Instead remember truth
and let it unfurl
There is power and strength
in being. a. Girl.
